 Acupuncture Treatment

Acupuncture treatments at the Copperfield Equine Therapy  Centre

Catherine has spent the last 35 years working as an Equine Acupuncturist with an established reputation and many years of hands on experience in using Acupuncture treatment in horses. After many years of riding racehorses herself she understands perfectly how pain and chronic inflammation can affect performance levels and more so the well being of the horses health and welfare.

Acupuncture treatment involves inserting sterile stainless steel acupuncture needles into specific point locations, this stimulates tiny nerve endings that carry impulses to the spinal cord and brain, and using electro-current to further improve stimulation and nerve function. It is commonly used to relieve musculoskeletal pain and treat a wide range of internal medical conditions. The purpose of an acupuncture treatment is to restore the patient to a state of balance or homeostasis. By influencing part of the brain called the hypothalamus, acupuncture can affect homeostatic regulatory mechanisms such as the control of blood pressure, pulse, respiration, intestinal motility, hormone secretion and white blood cell production.  Since stress plays such an important role in the etiology of chronic pain and inflammation, it has been my experience that it is helpful to include acupuncture treatments that can stimulate the immune system. Acupuncture induced responses regarding the immune system include an enhanced humoral immunity, increases in white blood cell counts, increased phagocytic activity, increased antibody levels and increased interferon levels.8 The enhancement of healing is aided by the increased microcirculation that occurs in acupuncture.

We evaluate your horse by scanning the body with the most advanced technique of TCM Acupuncture diagnostics, to pin-point the most exact anatomical location of lameness or pain, or if any systemic problems are affecting your horses general health and performance levels.  We literally peel the onion as one might say and find the very underlying causes of your horses health issues.

Acupuncture is proven to be the most successful choice of treatment for chronic pain and inflammation, or any paralysis like that of Laryngeal paralysis in foals and yearlings, radial nerve damage due to trauma and many more different neurological problems. Severe muscle atrophy from pelvic fractures and any severe nerve damage.

We also incorporate osteopathic manipulations in our treatment and when combined with Acupuncture we can ensure all bodily functions are in harmony and operating freely from any long term compensatory issues.

We also offer you some important information on your horses feet, and the importance of correct hoof balance and trimming and the necessary dietary nutraceuticals so important for hoof growth and health.

We can also advise you on the best anti parasitic treatment for your horses.
